Top-rated independent heating and cooling across north Georgia and the southern Appalachians

Zoning Controls

We install and repair zoning controls, the dampers, zone panels and thermostats that let one HVAC system heat and cool different parts of a house independently. Homeowners across Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee call us when upstairs runs hot while downstairs stays cold, or when a bonus room over the garage never keeps up. If that sounds like your house, call us and we will walk the home, look at the ductwork, and tell you whether zoning fits.

What a zoning job involves

Zoning splits your duct system into two or more areas, each with its own thermostat and its own motorized damper in the trunk or branch lines. A zone panel wires it together and tells the air conditioner or furnace when to run and which dampers to open. Work usually happens at the air handler and in the attic or crawlspace, since that is where the ducts live. Most homes take a day, sometimes two if we are adding a bypass or static relief.

What we check and install

Before anything gets cut, we measure the airflow the equipment moves and look at duct sizes, because a zoned system starves if the ducts cannot handle a single small zone running alone. We check the blower type, the thermostat wiring you already have, and how the return air is set up. Then we install dampers, the zone panel, and thermostats for each area. On heat pump and dual-fuel homes we also confirm the panel handles the changeover correctly.

How we decide it is the right call

Zoning is right when the rooms are genuinely different loads: a second floor, a west-facing addition, a finished basement, a room over a garage. It is the wrong call when the real problem is leaking duct in a red clay crawlspace, a crushed flex run, closed vents, or an undersized system. We check those first because fixing them is cheaper and often solves the complaint. If zoning still makes sense after that, we say so and explain what it takes.

Zoning Controls — quick answers

Can I add zoning to my existing system?

Often yes, if the ductwork has accessible trunk lines and the blower can handle reduced airflow. Variable-speed equipment zones best. We inspect the ducts and equipment first and tell you plainly either way.

Will zoning wear out my system faster?

Not if it is designed right. Problems come from zoning a system with no relief when only one small zone calls, which drives up static pressure. We size dampers and add relief so airflow stays where the equipment wants it.

Do I need a thermostat in every room?

No. Zones are areas, not rooms, so most homes end up with two or three thermostats. Grouping rooms with similar sun exposure and use keeps the system simpler and the temperatures steadier.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form and describe what you hear, smell or feel. Warm air, short cycling, a breaker that keeps tripping. That gives us a head start on the likely cause.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, electrical connections, refrigerant performance and the outdoor unit. We work the crawlspace and the attic too, because ductwork and drainage cause more trouble than people expect.

  3. Step 3

You decide, then we fix it

We explain what failed, what it takes to repair it, and what we would watch next season. No work starts until you say go. Most repairs finish the same visit when parts are on the truck.

Why homeowners call us

  • Mixed heating is normal to usHeat pumps, propane furnaces and dual-fuel setups all behave differently in cold weather. We know how a heat pump should sound in the thirties and when the backup heat is doing too much of the work.
  • We go under the houseRed clay crawlspaces hide crushed ducts, sweating lines and standing water. Comfort problems often start down there, not at the unit, so we look before we start replacing parts you may not need.
  • Plain explanationsYou get told what broke and why, in words that make sense. If a repair is a short-term patch on an aging system, we say that out loud so you can plan instead of guessing.
  • One crew, six statesWe serve homeowners across Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Same approach in every one: show up, diagnose properly, repair what needs repairing, leave the space clean.
  • All major brands, gas & electricOne independent crew for Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem and more.
  • Straight answersNot worth fixing? We say that out loud, and often it saves you the visit fee.
