What this repair involves
We start at the thermostat and work outward. A technician confirms the call for heat is actually reaching the equipment, then checks the outdoor unit for airflow, ice, and whether the compressor and fan are both running. From there we read pressures and temperatures to see if the system has flipped into heating mode at all. Many no-heat calls on heat pumps come down to a reversing valve stuck in cooling, and that shows up quickly once we have gauges on the system.
What we check on site
Common findings include a failed defrost board or sensor letting ice build on the outdoor coil, a weak or stuck reversing valve solenoid, low refrigerant charge from a leak, a bad contactor, or auxiliary heat strips that never energize. Indoors we look at the blower, the filter, and duct connections in the crawlspace, because red clay crawlspaces are hard on flex duct. We also verify the outdoor thermostat lockout and staging so backup heat comes on when it should.
How we decide repair is the right call
We tell you what we found and what it will take. If the compressor still pumps well and the failure is a board, sensor, valve coil, or contactor, repair usually makes sense and the system goes back to full heating. If the compressor is grounded, the coil is leaking in several spots, or the unit is far along in age and struggling every cold snap, we say so and lay out replacement as an option. Why does my heat pump blow cool air in winter?
Either the system is in a normal defrost cycle for a few minutes, or the reversing valve is not switching to heating. If the cool air lasts longer than about ten minutes, have it looked at.
Is ice on the outdoor unit normal?
Light frost is normal and defrost clears it. A thick coat of ice covering the coil is not, and it usually means a defrost control, sensor, or airflow problem. Turn the system off and call us.
Why is my power bill high with no heat?
Often the heat pump has quit heating and the electric backup strips are carrying the whole house. They keep you warm but run hard. Getting the heat pump side repaired brings usage back down.
